Exit interviews with those leaving a faith

One of the things that is really hard for clergy people to do is the exit interview, the conversation with a person who is leaving your faith.

BECAUSE the Christian church often fails to provide such services, one of the things that Wiccan clergy are often required to do is provide an exit interview for a faith that they don't hold.

This Interview is inherantly flawed. What we have to do is attempt a reconciliation with our client's previous faith. If, for instance, a gay client left Christianity because of his sexual orientation, it is our job to make sure he is made aware of the Fact that there are Christian churches that are not anti-gay.

Likewise, we need to be aware of those that pick Wicca as a faith because it seems really cool or faddish at the time. These people should be strenously pushed toward another faith because it is not unlikely that they lack the moral backbone being Wiccan takes.

As an exit interviewer, you should see that the person is convinced their interest in Wicca is genuine and that their former faith is wrong for them.

As strange as it is to say it, it actually strengthens our faith to push people who are not Wiccan on the inside away. Instead of having a collection of dabblers we then have a collection of the truely involved.

As with all things, though, the final judgement call should be yours and theirs.
