there are two worksheets below that will help you create your sept. You should always bear in mind that if you find your beliefs too radical for UEW, we may be able to help you find a group that already bears striking similarity to your beliefs. Sometimes someone begins with a study of UEW and finds later that they are more interested in Asatru, Druidism, Hellenic reconstructionism or other faiths. The first worksheet is called the "rule out" worksheet. Move down the numbers one by one, in the order that they specify. For example, if #1 says "if your answer is yes, go to #3" and your answer is yes, you'd go to #3. Often, you'll see the term "crystallizing" used to explain what you are doing in creating a sept. This word is used to mean that you are taking the practices that float around within the bubble that is UEW and sticking them together with other beliefs to form a more solid, less flexible whole. This sheet exists to help you decide if creating a sept is in your best interest or if you would be better served by taking another course of action. You may be referred to websites on non-wiccan Pagan practices that better suit your interests. This sheet is not carved in stone, you can decide to create a sept even though you feel the sheet leads you to another course of action. This is a mere tool to help you. Sept Creation rule-out worksheet: #1. Read carefully over the Five Points of Wiccan Belief. Do you feel that the practices you are crystallizing are fully inclusive of these beliefs. If Yes, Go to #8, if No, go to #2. #2. Do you feel that The Ethics of Self Responsibility and Constant Improvement are appropriate to the beliefs you are crystalizing? If Yes, Go to #3, if No, go to #10. #3. Do you feel that the practices you are crystalizing do not include a belief in a Law of Return, Rule of Three or similar belief? If Yes, Go to #4, if No, go to #6 #4.Which is closest
to your belief in "return." A. The Law of Return works on a purely social
level, but doesn't apply to the universe. B.The energy you
put out comes back to you, but does not increase. C.My
actions do not have any effect on the world around me, whatsoever. D.The
Law of Return works in a structured manner, like Hindu Karma, or is decided
by God. E.The gods determine what will happen, my actions cannot
effect that.
#5. While perhaps not a common interpretation of the Law of Return, you still have a belief in it that is compatible with Wicca. Go to #6. #6.Do you feel that the beliefs that you are crystalizing are incompatible with the Wiccan Rede:"an it harm none, do as you will?" If yes go to #7; if no, go to #8. #7. If expanding the Wiccan Rede in such a way that it says "live in a way that causes minimal harm" and includes the caveats that defense of oneself and of those weaker than oneself is justification for committing harm, your beliefs are not incompatible with The Rede, go on to #8. If you still feel it is not for you, go to #15. #8. Choose which is closest to the way your proposed sept views the Divine: A. the Divine is an unknowable all comprised of an energy that is without gender or is a balance of masculine, feminine and indescribale energies. B. The divine is comprised of many gods, and the sept recognizes them all, even if worshipping only one or two. C.The divine is comprised of a solitary mother Goddess. D.The divine is comprised of a solitary masculine God.. E.The Divine cannot be known by mankind, but can be perceived by observing the universe. F. The Divine is a huge thing without gender. G. I do not know if there is a divine or not, but if there is one I suspect it is not just male or just female. If A,B E,F or G, Go to #9; if C go to #12 ;If D, go to #13. #9.I feel that the
rituals used in UEW are not specific enough to meet my needs.
Yes, go to #14, No go to #21.
#10. Because The Ethics of Self-Responsibility and Constant Improvement are so very central to MOST Pagan movements, not only would a sept with these beliefs not have a place in UEW, but you would be hard-pressed to find other pagan groups that would accept a member without these two beliefs. It is advised you seek outside Paganism for a faith that is more restrictive of its members. #11.The idea that ones actions do not effect the world in any manner is not compatible with UEW or any form of Wicca, and may, if fact not be reflected in any pagan teaching. It is advised you seek outside Paganism for a faith closer to what you do believe, if you feel you need any belief at all. #12. A single female mother goddess is the belief of Dianic Paganism. Rather than spend your time trying to conform Wicca to fit the mold of Dianic Paganism, it is strongly suggested you research a Dianic Pagan organization. #13. A single male God is outside the realm of most Paganism. Your beliefs may be better suited to an Abrahamic practice or similar patriachal faith. #14. It would seem that creating a sept might be a good idea. You may go to the Sept Creation worksheet or you may go to question #21 to further solidify your ideas. #15. Do you feel a strong affinity to the Norse or Germanic Gods? If yes, click here for information on Asatru, if not, continue to #16. #16. Do you feel a strong affinity to the Greek gods? If yes, click for information on Hellenic Reconstructionism, if not, continue to #17. #17. Do you feel strong ties to the ancient Celts, especially the warrior aspects? If yes, click for information on Celtic Reconstructionism. If not, go on to #18. #18. Do you feel a strong tie to the Earth, but not necessarily to a God or Goddess? If yes, click the link for information on Modern Druidry. If Not, go on to #19. #19. Do you feel a strong tie to the Christian God or related figures (Mary, Jesus, Angels) If yes, click here for information on "Christopaganism" If not, go on to #20. #20. There are many forms of Paganism that are on the fringe of the Pagan community, either because the beliefs are specific or held by a small group of people. Click here to search for beliefs like yours on Ariadnespider, Altavista or Avatarsearch. #21. In my practice of UEW, my Patron/matron God(s) call me to a higher form of service. I feel that the rituals of UEW are helpful, but that my worship would be served by additional rituals and/or additional duties to my god. Yes, go to #22, No go to #25. #22. There are magickal aspects of my practice that are not covered in UEW, but that I feel are a vital part of my worship and I wish to share them with others. Yes, go to #24, No go to #23. #23. I feel a strong tie to a specific god or goddess and have a strong tie to serve that god, specifically, although I do not believe my god to be the only god, s/he is the only god for me and I want to share my faith with those similarly called. Yes, go to #24, No go to #25. #24. You have a very strong case for creating a new sept, I would highly urge creating one or seeing if one does not already exist that will fufill your needs. #25. While some of your practices sound as though they would be well served by sept creation, you might also be well served by tailoring general UEW practice to your specific Gods. Use the Sept Creation worksheet if you feel that your differences are drastic enough that you would wish to teach those differences to students. Otherwise, use the standard curricula and continue in the sept you are in or with the general UEW practice.
