Types of Covens
There are Eight basic Types of UEW Coven, as well as solitary Practice:
Non-Septed Coven-Hierarchal
Non-Septed Coven-Egalitarian
Septed Coven-Hierarchal
Septed Coven-Egalitarian
Teaching Coven
Online Coven
Family Coven
Interest-based Coven.
Non-Septed Coven, with hierarchy:
A Non-Septed Hierachal coven of UEW uses standardized ritual forms detailed in UEW, and uses the circles of UEW as their hierarchy. Most NSHCs advocate solitary practice 90% of the time, and group practice during the holidays or at a specified time (Saturdays, full moons, etc) Leaders are elected or chosen from the highest ranking members
Non-Septed Coven, no hierarchy:
A Non-Septed egalitarian coven of UEW uses standardized ritual forms detailed in UEW, but all members, regardless of position in UEW, are equals in the coven. Most NSECs advocate solitary practice 90% of the time, and group practice during the holidays or at a specified time (Saturdays, full moons, etc)Rituals are either performed by the whole group or led by an elected leader or done on a rotation.
Septed Coven, with hierarchy:
A Septed Hierachal coven of UEW uses standardized ritual forms detailed in UEW WHEN MEETING WITH OTHER COVENS, but the rest of the time practices specific ritual and use specific ritual language. The election and position of leaders is determined by the rules of the individual sept. Sept members are also granted UEW circles, in addition to their place in the sept. Septed Hierarchal covens occassionally instruct in how to do solitary worship within their sept outline.
Septed Coven, no hierarchy:
A Septed egalitarian coven of UEW uses standardized ritual forms detailed in UEW WHEN MEETING WITH OTHER COVENS, but the rest of the time practices specific ritual and use specific ritual language. Most SECs advocate solitary practice 90% of the time, and group practice during the holidays or at a specified time (Saturdays, full moons, etc)Rituals are either performed by the whole group or led by an elected leader or done on a rotation.
Teaching Coven:
A teaching coven is led by a member of the Second or Third circle, and teaches NON-SEPTED UEW to a group of people at the same time on the same level (all 1st circle, all second, etc)
Online Coven:
An online coven teaches Septed or Non-Septed UEW in a manner similar to a Teaching coven.
Family Coven:
A family coven consists entirely of members of one family or an extended family, and may be any of the forms above.
Interest-Based Coven:
An interest based Coven or "Coven of Solitaries" is an Egalitarian or teaching coven focused on one thing. They are often temporary in nature, like working prayers to end a war. Some interest based covens focus on healing, on abuse issues, even on recovering from abusive religious experiences. Most IBCs allow members from all covens and traditions, as well as solitairies. IBCs are sometimes called "working groups."
